The entire Northeast is reeling under intense heat over the past few days. Bad news is more hot and humid days are expected as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is predicting a further rise in temperatures. Maximum temperatures have surged by 5 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal, reaching up to 38°C, and conditions are expected to remain unchanged in the coming days.
According to the IMD reports, the heatwave is being attributed to deficit rainfall, changing wind patterns, and reduced cloud cover, causing severe discomfort for residents across the region.
In response to the heatwave, Kamrup Metro, Dibrugarh and Cachar Districts of Assam, have made changes to the school timings and issued guidelines to keep the students safe from the scorching heat.
The District Magistrates of Kamrup Metro and Cachar have introduced new schedules, with classes starting at 7:30 AM and ending by 12:30 PM to avoid peak heat hours. In Dibrugarh, schools will begin classes at 8:00 AM. These changes will be effective from September 21, 2024 until further order.
All private, state, and central government schools have been directed to implement precautionary measures, including conducting morning assemblies indoors to avoid outdoor exposure. Schools must also ensure that students have access to adequate drinking water, with all water facilities fully operational. Additionally, students have been advised to avoid wearing waistcoats and ties to reduce heat retention.
Schools have been instructed to check that all fans are functioning properly and that classrooms are well-ventilated. In the event of power outages, institutions are required to arrange for backup power systems to ensure student comfort.
These preventive measures are aimed at safeguarding the health and well-being of students amid the ongoing heatwave. The guidelines will remain in effect until further notice, according to the district authorities. These preventive measures have been put in place to ensure the health and well-being of students amidst the current heatwave. These guidelines are to be followed until further notice, the orders said.
