The students’ bodies of Northeast have declared an all out war against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Leading students’ organisations across the region under the banner of the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) today decided to oppose the proposed Citizenship Bill and have announced a region wide agitation starting with a sit in demonstration in Guwahati on Saturday to oppose the central move. The decision was taken during an emergency meeting attended by leading students’ organisations of the Northeast barring Sikkim.

While the NESO protest will commence in Guwahati tomorrow, come May 21, leading students’ bodies will take the agitation to all district headquarters of the region. The students’ bodies were in unison in stating that the seven states of the Northeast stand united when it comes to opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

NESO adviser and chief adviser of the influential All Assam Students’ Union Samujjal Bhattacharya reiterated that Northeast and Assam in particular cannot be a dumping ground for illegal migrants. He said all seven states are united in their fight against the bill. Bhattacharya added that NESO will submit a memorandum in this regard to the Centre and even take the protest to Delhi.

Bhattacharya went on to demand that the NRC should be updated in all states of Northeast to weed out illegal migrants. Besides the NESO also demanded Inner Line Permit in all Northeastern states. It also called for special constitutional status for Northeast. Welcoming the move of the Meghalaya government to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill, the NESO urged all NE CMs to follow suit and come on a common platform to oppose the bill.
