It was a super Thursday for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led NDA which beat its own record touching the 350 mark as the Congress and opposition was swept away.

Against all so called odds and talks of anti-incumbency, the BJP beat its own 2014 record to touch the 300 mark as the NDA is all set to form the government for the second term in a row. The NDA has crossed the 336 seat mark it had achieved in the 2014 general elections.

The BJP victory was made special by the defeat of Congress president Rahul Gandhi in his bastion of Amethi. Gandhi in turn accepted defeat and reports were doing rounds that the Congress president even offered to step down from his post.

Addressing BJP workers at the BJP headquarters in Delhi earlier in the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the NDA tally of over 350 seats was the biggest victory in the history of democracy worldwide.

He reiterated that the BJP will remain committed to the Constitution and the spirit of federalism. Terming this as a victory of the people of India, Modi took a jibe at opposition saying that the politics of pseudo secularism had been defeated.

Meanwhile, the biggest upset of the day was the defeat of Congress president Rahul Gandhi to Smirti Irani in Amethi. Gandhi accepted defeat and congratulated his rival who won by a margin of over 28 thousand votes.

Voting had taken place for the Lok Sabha in 542 out of 543 constituencies across 7 phases from April 11 to May 19.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to urge BJP supporters to remove Chowkidar from their names in social media. In his tweet Modi said,”The time has come to take the Chowkidar spirit to the next level. Keep this spirit alive at every moment and continue working for India’s progress.”
