In the wake of the devastating landslide at Pherima village, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of six people who were killed on National Highway-29 (Dimapur-Kohima) due to massive landslide that struck in Nagaland’s Chumukedima district on Tuesday night.

At least Rs 16,000 will be given to the injured persons as per the norms of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).

The deceased persons have been identified as- Khriesangulie (46) and ⁠Anhieii (57), residents of Kijumetuma; Samla Dutta (43), Daju (60) and Vijay (28) of Pherima and Sopon Biswas (52).

After the casualties, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio convened an emergency meeting and took stock of the situation on the National Highway-29.

Taking to X, Rio said, “Convened a meeting and took stock of the disaster situation on NH-29, which resulted in 6 casualties. I urge citizens to heed to official advisories. The Govt. is providing emergency services and ex-gratia. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.”

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) was also directed to make the NH-29 operational within 24 hours to ensure that supply of essential commodities is not adversely affected.

Meanwhile, alternative routes were also decided in the meeting.

NHIDCL was further directed to take rectification measures, including the deployment of latest technology to ensure that such events do not occur in the future and the highway which is a lifeline for both Nagaland and Manipur is maintained throughout the year.
