Nagaland: After resounding victory in ULB polls, NDPP says open for collaboration

Now, with Lok Sabha and ULB polls over, Minister of Power & Parliamentary Affairs, K.G. Kenye said the Political Affairs Committee will focus on the Naga issue.

With the results of the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections declared, the Government of Nagaland is aiming to complete all formalities by July 6 for the formation of the new Municipality councils.

Speaking to Northeast Live after the resounding victory of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in the ULB polls, Minister of Power & Parliamentary Affairs, K.G. Kenye said that doors are open to anyone who wishes to join in the spirit of an opposition-less government.

“Our doors are open to all who want to come and join the council. In the spirit of the opposition-less government and the present People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government in Nagaland comprises of the NDPP, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Janta Dal (U), RPI (Athawale), LJP (Ram Vilas), National People’s Party (NPP), Naga People’s Front (NPF) and 4 independent candidates, we welcome anybody who steps forward to come take part in the council along with us,” said Minister K.G. Kenye.

He further informed that they are receiving support from various parties and many elected councillors are also merging with NDPP. He added that all formalities should be completed by 6 July.

Minister Kenye also thanked the electorates of Nagaland for the overwhelming mandate in the ULB polls.

He also said that the number could have been much higher if the Eastern people had also participated in the polls.

Now, with Lok Sabha and ULB polls over, Kenye said the Political Affairs Committee will focus on the Naga issue.

The municipality elections in Nagaland were held on June 26 after 20 long years.

Notably, for the first time, the elections were held with 33 per cent reservation for women, aiming to enhance gender representation in municipal and town councils.

NDPP won all three municipal councils –Kohima, Mokokchung and Dimapur and in the 21 town councils, the ruling party secured a majority in most, with the exception of Wokha, Bhandari and Phek.
