Mizoram Congress president Lal Thanhawla has submitted his resignation as Chief Minister of the state.

The veteran Congress leader called on Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan to tender his resignation.

Lal Thanhawla lost from both South Champhai and Serchhip as the his party, the Congress, could garner only 5 seats.

The MNF swept to power in Mizoram winning as many as 26 seats and is all set to form the next government.

Meanwhile, speaking to mediapersons after submitting his resignation, Lal Thanhawla said the Congress perhaps underestimated its opponents.

The veteran leader added that he was at a loss to explain why the Congress fared poorly in the state.
