In a recent turn of events, the Winter Capital movement in Meghalaya has been thrown into jeopardy due to the outbreak of violence in Tura. Congress MLA from Gambegre constituency Saleng Sangma expressed his condemnation of the Tura violence, emphasizing that resorting to such means could not yield any positive outcomes or victory. The recent attack on the Chief Minister is seen as a significant setback, impeding the momentum that the movement had gained through the hunger strike protest.

“Attacking Chief Minister was very much condemnable actually, no violence can give any good results or any kind of victory. Eventually, violence will lead to a loss. Like Manipur both the tribes are getting lost now. Meiteis are getting lost, and Kukis are getting lost. Likewise in Meghalaya also definitely. The genesis of the Winter capital by the hunger strike was getting momentum in the meantime, but it so happened that the exodus abruptly ended by attacking Chief Minister which is wrong. Violence will only lead to a loss,” said Saleng Sangma.

According to Sangma’s statements, the violence appears to be the work of miscreants associated with a party other than the ACHIK group, which had been leading the peaceful hunger strike. He highlighted the need for a prompt and thorough inquiry to identify those responsible and to prevent any further disruptions to the movement.

The incident involving Cabinet Minister Ampareen being pushed back from Jain Jal further highlighted the apparent breach of security for the Chief Minister. The authorities thwarted an attempt to engage in a discussion, indicating a potential security risk. MLA Saleng Sangma expressed concern that the situation could have escalated into something far worse, potentially even leading to armed conflict.

“The whole Garo society was at a loss now; the 12 days hunger strike all went in vain because of this situation,” Sangma lamented.
