Meghalaya police to procure 16 drones to curb drug trafficking

Meghalaya Police has launched Narco App to allow people to file complaints about drugs movement keeping their identity secret

In a bid to combat the growing menace of drug trafficking in the northeastern state of Meghalaya, the state police force has adopted a slew of measures including launching the Narco App and finalising plans to procure at least 16 drones to keep a tab on drug traffickers.

“Narco App we have already developed and it is loaded in the Google Playstore anybody can access it for free and they can give information to the police without disclosing their identity. That is helping us because the people are giving information from far flung areas by using this App. As far as drones are concerned, it is still under proposal stage and we are planning to initially hire or to procure at least 16 drones for the Shillong city to keep tab on the drug traffickers”, DGP Bishnoi said speaking exclusively to Northeast Live.
Given the fact that the state is geographically close to the notorious Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia, Meghalaya has become a focal point for drug trafficking. DGP Bishnoi emphasized the importance of streamlining the intelligence system and installing technology to tackle the interstate movement of drugs effectively. “Meghalaya is becoming a very sensitive state because of the proximity to the golden triangle area. Our drive will continue, and enforcement will spread to every nook and corner of Meghalaya to safeguard our youth from this menace.”

The police force will utilize 100 bikes for mobile squad parties, reaching areas inaccessible to larger vehicles. This strategic move aims to intensify patrolling in narrow lanes and remote corners where drug peddlers operate, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the region.

“Our target is to improve the conviction rate so that drug traffickers can be behind bars for extended periods,” stated DGP Bishnoi.
