Unitarianism is a unique spiritual movement rooted in the indigenous Khasi religion of the region
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has extended warm greetings to the Unitarians of Meghalaya as they celebrate the 136th Unitarian Day. This day holds special significance in Meghalaya, being the only state in India to observe it as a state holiday.
“Today we celebrate a unique spiritual occasion that has its roots in the Khasi region. On the 136th Unitarian Day, I extend my warm greetings to the Unitarians of Meghalaya. Wishing them a blessed Unitarian Day!” Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma on X.
Unitarianism is a unique spiritual movement rooted in the indigenous Khasi religion of the region. Unlike traditional beliefs, Unitarians emphasize the unity of God rather than the concept of the Trinity. The origins of this movement can be traced back to the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation when people across Europe sought the right to read and interpret the Bible independently, establish a direct connection with God without intermediary figures like priests, and follow their own conscience in matters of faith.
In the Khasi-Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, the Unitarian movement was initiated by Babu Hajom Kissor Singh, who came from a Christian background but was dissatisfied with orthodox Christian doctrines. With the support of Khasi Brahmos and American Unitarians, he began the Unitarian movement in 1887 in Jowai. This faith was called “Ka Niam Untarian” or “The Unitarian Religion.” On September 18, 1887, Singh conducted the first church service at his home in Jowai, a date that holds special significance for Khasi Unitarians.
