The new regulations introduce a structured categorization for industrial zones, specifying requirements such as FAR.

The Meghalaya Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, convened today and approved several important decisions, including the revised Meghalaya Building By-Laws. The new regulations aim to streamline industrial zone development and facilitate orderly expansion throughout all designated industrial zones in the state.

The revised building by-laws, which now include amendments to categorize industrial zones effectively is in response to the growing need for organized development, particularly in the rapidly expanding New Shillong area, where urban planning must be approached in a scientific manner.

Cabinet Minister and spokesperson for the MDA 2 Government, Paul Lyngdoh, briefed the media about the Cabinet decisions and said, “This initiative aims to categorize industrial zones into groups that were not previously defined. The amendments to the building by-laws for these zones are essential as we continue to see expansion, especially in the New Shillong area.”

The new regulations introduce a structured categorization for industrial zones, specifying requirements such as Floor Area Ratio (FAR) and setback standards for different types of buildings.

In addition to the revised building by-laws, the Cabinet approved the Meghalaya Forensic Science Service Rules. This new framework will allow for the establishment of additional posts for mobile forensic crime scene units in all districts, thereby enhancing the state’s crime detection capabilities.

Minister Paul Lyngdoh further explained that the approval of the 2021 Forensic Science Laboratory Service Rules is aimed at strengthening crime detection through mobile forensic units and an increase in forensic staff across the state.

Recent upgrades have also seen the forensic laboratory elevated to a directorate status, with ongoing improvements in resources, training, and equipment. For particularly complex cases, the government is committed to seeking external analysis, demonstrating its dedication to improving forensic support for law enforcement in Meghalaya.
