Meghalaya Budget 2023: With Focus on Education, Govt Presents Rs 1,592 cr Budget. Key Highlights Here

Education sector got the maximum allocation of Rs 2,885 crores followed by the Finance sector with an allocation of Rs 2,243 crores for the financial year 2023-24

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday presented MDA 2.0 government’s first Budget after being sworn in earlier this month for a second term. The Conrad Sangma government presented Rs 1,592 crore Budget for the financial year 2023-24. CM Sangma termed the Budget to be a ‘people’s Budget’.

The big focus of this Budget has been on the education sector for which the Conrad government in its earlier stint had drawn a lot of flak and its ally BJP and opposition TMC had slammed it for ignoring the sector.

This time the government has allocated Rs 2,885 crores for the education sector, the highest among the key sectors.

The Government announced that four new polytechnics in Ri Bhoi, Nongstoin, William Nagar and Gasuapara, South Garo Hills will be made functional.

The construction of College of Science and Commerce in Mahendraganj, South West Garo Hills, and Mawphlang, East Khasi Hills will be completed next year.

The government also announced the creation of 5 lakh job opportunities for young people with a focus on entrepreneurship, tourism, knowledge and digital services, and agriculture and related industries.

In the Finance sector, the government has allocated Rs 2,243 crores.

In the Health & Family Welfare sector, the government has allocated Rs 1,805 crores.

For Community & Rural Development sector, Rs 1,588 was allocated while, Rs 717 crores was allocated for power sector.

The overall allocation towards climate action for 2023-24 is Rs 3,411 crore while the overal allocation towards youth budget is Rs 2,215 crores and for Gender budget Rs 3,354.
