In fact, Hek also turned down speculations that the BJP leadership could not convince its party workers to lend support to the NPP.
While the NPP is expecting that it will be a victory for the party in the Tura Lok Sabha seat, provided that the BJP votes have gone into its kitty, the saffron party has affirmed that this has happened.
A L Hek, minister in the Conrad Sangma cabinet, and BJP MLA from the Pynthorumkhrah constituency, said that the party leadership as well as the grassroot workers in the state have followed all the necessary instructions given to them by the central leadership, as far as extending support to the NPP is concerned.
Hek briefing newspersons said, “BJP has given very clear instructions and also the message to all the BJP karyakartas (workers) to support the NPP and accordingly the BJP also has worked according to the message, directions and instructions given by the central and national leaders in Delhi of the BJP to support the NPP.”
In fact, Hek also turned down speculations that the BJP leadership could not convince its party workers to lend support to the NPP.
He said, “How can you say that the BJP could not convince it’s karyakartas? I called a meeting in my own constituency and held 5 meetings in my mandal.
In other constituencies also, I saw every day, in every mandal the BJP is holding party meeting, reaching out to the people to vote for the NPP. How do you say that the BJP workers are not convinced? We (BJP Karyakartas) are fully convinced.”
However, Hek admitted that there was a sense of unhappiness among a section of leaders since the BJP did not field its candidate in both the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats.
AL Hek stated, “That will happen to all the political parties also, not only BJP. If a political party does not set up their own candidate, it is a setback for the political party. So few of our karyakartas are not happy because we did not set up our own candidate.”
Worth mentioning, names of at least 11 ticket aspirants had surfaced which was sent to the central leadership for the necessary level. However, the BJP decided to back the NPP in both the seats.
On April 23, Meghalaya Education Minister and state NPP general secretary Rakkam A Sangma said that if the NPP has fully secured the BJP votes, than it will be an easy win for incumbent MP and party candidate Agatha Sangma to win the Tura seat.
