Bala Devi, the prolific striker from Manipur, etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian woman footballer to score 50 international goals. Bala achieved this remarkable feat during the 2024 SAFF Women’s Championship, scoring against Pakistan in Nepal. Her achievement was celebrated with a standing ovation from fans in Nepal, showing admiration for her talent.

Bala, often called the “goal machine” of Indian women’s football, expressed immense pride in her accomplishment.

A report in (All India Football Federation) AIFF Media quoting her said, “I feel proud to score 50 goals for India. It was a very special moment for me,” she said, dedicating the goal to her father, who she credits for shaping her career. “Everything I am today is because of my father. He taught me how to kick a ball, how to score. As I stepped onto the field, memories of him came rushing back, and I couldn’t hold back my tears.”

Bala’s 50th goal came from a well-executed set-piece play, with teammate Manisha assisting her perfectly. “I felt it was my moment to take the shot, and Manisha’s pass was spot on,” Bala recalled.

Having played for the national team since 2005, Bala reflected on her long career and the affection she continues to receive. “When I arrived in Nepal, people recognized me, and some even thought I was here as a coach. The support from fans and teammates over the years has been overwhelming. It’s a great feeling to still be playing and loved after so many years.”

After a brief break due to injury, Bala made a strong comeback, attributing her recovery to the mental strength she’s built over her career and the support of her coaches and teammates. “Coach Santosh and the entire staff created a comfortable environment that helped me regain my confidence after my injury,” she shared.

Bala also spoke about her experiences in European football, having played for Rangers FC, and how Indian women’s football is growing. “I learned a lot during my time in Europe about fitness and professionalism. Indian football is developing, and more players are now going abroad to play. With continued support from AIFF, we can achieve great things.”

Summing up her journey, Bala described her career as “SHE POWER.” “It’s all hard work managing myself, my fitness, and even my household. Nothing comes easy,” she said with pride.

She ended with a message to her supporters: “Keep supporting us. The more you support, the further we will go.”

Bala dedicated her milestone to her father and reflected on her long career, resilience, and the growing landscape of Indian women’s football.
