The Manipur university community has rejected the ongoing probe into the allegations against controversial and now suspended vice chancellor AP Pandey by a 2-member inquiry committee and has demanded institution of a judicial commission to examine the charges under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the teachers, staff and student organisations of the university earlier today in the wake of the crisis snowballing following the midnight police raid in the university campus and the subsequent detention of 6 professors and 9 top student leaders.

Close to a 100 others who were picked up on the night of the raid have since been released.

The decision of the university rejecting the ongoing probe comes in the wake of rumours flying thick and fast that pressure is being mounted on the state government to create a situation for the return of Prof Pandey as the VC of the university.

Meanwhile, inmates of two girls’ hostels are continuing with the indefinite hunger strike that began yesterday in protest against police highhandedness and presence of armed personnel within the varsity campus.

There are also reports of several students particularly from the boys’ hostels keeping away from the campus for fear of being picked up by the police.

The situation is tense with as many as 6 student organisations calling a 48 hour general strike from the midnight of September 26 demanding immediate release of the detained students and faculty members.
