The explosion took place when Haokip's wife Sapam Charubala, went to clean the surroundings of what was a vacant house last night.

In a fresh incident of violence, former Saikul MLA in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district came under attack after a suspected land mine or IED exploded at his residence leading to the death of his wife.

The former MLA and his daughter, however, had a narrow escape.
As per inputs, the explosion took place when Sapam Charubala, the wife of former MLA Yamthong Haokip went to clean the surroundings of what was a vacant house abandoned by their son a few months ago.

Haokip’s wife was immediately rushed to the Saikul Primary Health Sub Centre where she succumbed to her injuries later in the evening. Sapam Charubala had suffered severe injuries in the explosion.

While some sources say that the son had abandoned the house where the explosion took place following a family dispute, the question that arises is that who is behind the planting of the suspected land mine or IED in the abandoned compound?

Was it targeted at the MLA and his family? Is there any proscribed group behind the attack? The explosion also draws focus to the easy availability of arms and explosives in violence-wrecked Manipur.

This incident comes after 3 people were killed and several injured in a fierce gun battle between a Kuki rebel group, currently under truce and village volunteers in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district on Friday.
