Battleground Manipur: Tight security for 1st phase of polling

The stage is set for the first phase of polling in Manipur tomorrow. Over 12 lakh voters will decide the fate of 173 candidates with polling set to take place

The stage is set for the first phase of polling in Manipur tomorrow. Over 12 lakh voters will decide the fate of 173 candidates with polling set to take place tomorrow in 38 assembly constituencies spread across 5 Electoral districts of Manipur.

Nearly 7000 polling personnel will be on ground to ensure smooth voting in as many as 1721 polling stations in the 38 Assembly constituencies.

Polling is scheduled to take place in 13 seats in Imphal West, 10 in Imphal East, 6 each in Bishnupur and Churachandpur and 3 Assembly seats in Kangpokpi tomorrow.

In the first phase the BJP will be contesting in all the 38 seats, Congress in 35 seats, the NPP will be contesting in 27 seats and the JD-U in 28 seats.

Elaborate security arrangements are in place for the first phase of voting with Manipur witnessing another instance of pre-poll violence last night.

Briefing the media, Manipur CEO Rajesh Agarwal gave an update of the security measures besides demarcation of sensitive polling stations.
