Grandpa Memeh carries a load of fresh vegetables on his back and walks 5 kilometres to the Government Upper Primary School in Kuntse.

In the serene village of Laidiung, nestled in Tawang district’s Dudunghar-Zemithang circle, lives an 80-year-old man whose life embodies selfless service. Fondly known as Memeh—grandpa in the Monpa dialect—Poodi is a shining example of how age and resources are no barriers to compassion and humanity.

Every week, Grandpa Memeh carries a load of fresh vegetables on his back and walks 5 kilometres to the Government Upper Primary School in Kuntse. These vegetables, given freely to the school’s self-managed hostel, ensure that the children, living far from their homes, enjoy nutritious meals. “I feel happy seeing these children eat fresh vegetables. They can even make momos with them,” said the elderly hero, his face lighting up with joy.

The school’s teacher, Lobsang Rinchin, commended Memeh’s dedication. “His weekly contribution is unconditional and deeply inspiring,” he said. In a gesture of gratitude, the school offered Grandpa Memeh a khatak—a traditional silk scarf—and refreshments, which overwhelmed him with joy.

This simple yet profound act of kindness serves as a powerful reminder that helping others is a timeless virtue. Memeh’s unwavering commitment proves that age is no barrier to making a difference. His story inspires us to embrace compassion and extend support wherever possible, leaving a legacy of kindness for future generations.

Grandpa Memeh’s weekly journey isn’t just about vegetables; it’s about nourishing the spirit of humanity.
