The Supreme Court monitored mega citizens list updation exercise, that began in 2013, is set to include names of all Indian Citizens and thus help in the identification of illegal immigrants in Assam.
Although, the entire exercise is a Supreme Court monitored one, many have been complaining that the exercise carried out by a set of people drawn from the Assam Government or hired by the NRC authorities have been faulty and therefore may not be error-free.
The apprehension is over names of genuine Indian citizens not making it to the NRC while those of illegal migrants finding a place in the list.
The entire exercise is based on a person’s linkage to the 1951 NRC and electoral rolls until 25 March 1971.
The hard copies of the final NRC would be available in all the 2500 NRC Seva Kendras, besides 157 Circle offices and the respective Deputy Commissioners’ offices.
The copies consisting names of only the persons whose names were included in the NRC after being excluded from the draft NRC would be made available.
The Supreme Court, which has been monitoring the NRC Update exercise, in its August 13 judgment, had asked the NRC authorities to publish only the exclusion list online.
