India today completed its #1YearOfVaccineDrive against the highly contagious Coronavirus infection by administering more than 156 crore vaccine doses as part of the national vaccination campaign.

Since the country’s vaccination drive began, 90% of the eligible population has received their first dose, with 60% receiving their second dose and 42 lakh has received ‘precautionary doses’ also known as booster shots.

Booster shots are now being administered to frontline workers and vulnerable individuals over the age of 60.

On this day a year ago, India decided to embark on the daunting challenge of vaccinating its massive 1.38 billion-strong population against Covid-19.\

In India, eight Covid-19 vaccines have been approved for emergency use in the last year. These are Covaxin by Bharat Biotech, Covishield by Serum Institute of India, Zydus Cadila’s ZyCoV-D, Russia’s Sputnik V, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, Covovax by Serum Institute of India, and Corbevax by Biological E.

Meanwhile, according to data updated by the Union Ministry of Health today morning, India reported 2,71,202 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, slightly more than Saturday’s infections.

The positivity rate was also lower, at 16.28%, down from 16.66%. In the last 24 hours, the country has also recorded 314 Covid-19-related fatalities, bringing the total death toll to 4,86,066.

As many as 1,38,331 people have recovered from the infection, bringing the total number of active cases to 15,50,377.

So far, 7,743 Omicron cases have been identified across the country, an increase of 28.17 percent since Saturday.
