Amid rumours that National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Meghalaya Cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh could be chosen by the party to contest from the Shillong seat in the Parliament polls scheduled to be held in March or April next year, Ampareen Lyngdoh said that she will not shy away if the party decides to file her and that she will take up any challenge coming he way.

According to sources, Ampareen Lyngdoh’s name was discussed in a recent party meeting, which was also attended by NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

Speaking to media regarding the buzz around her name, Minister Lyngdoh said, “Currently, I can not comment on this. The party will decide which candidate to nominate for the Shillong seat. If they are putting me up to the task, I will take up the challenge. I am a representative of the people. You put me up to a task to represent my people, I will not shy away.”

“There are procedures that they probably have in place and there are interests that have already been expressed. I am a worker of NPP and since I am here to serve the people of the state. I will take up any challenge that my party thinks I am in a position to take,” she added.

She said, “I have always been put up to these kinds of challenges and I never shied away in the past. I will take things as they come. I know it will be difficult, but I will do the needful.”

Meghalaya Health Minister and four-time MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh is being seen as the strongest contender even though the name of former BJP leader and Mawsynram MLA and now NPP politician HM Shangpliang is also doing the rounds.

Meanwhile, NPP Meghalaya president Prestone Tynsong has called for a meeting today to discuss the candidature, party sources said.
