Dean of Academic Affairs at the IIT-Guwahati KV Krishna has resigned from his post following intense protests by students demanding his resignation, alleging poor handling by the IIT Guwahati administration of the stress and pressure that students are facing in the premier learning institute that led to another student committing suicide.
The protests began after a third-year B. Tech Computer Science student, Bimlesh Kumar was found dead in his hostel room early Monday morning.
The body of Kumar, a 21-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Following the incident, the agitating students are demanding accountability and immediate action from the administration regarding the rising number of suicide cases in the IIT Guwahati campus.
This suicide case was the second such death on the campus in two months and the third case this year.
IIT Guwahati issued a statement on Monday stating that students’ well-being is their “top priority.”
“IITG is deeply saddened to report the loss of a student from our community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.
“We encourage our student community to reach out to our support networks. IITG reaffirms its commitment to fostering a supportive and safe environment for all students,” the spokesperson added.
“IITG remains dedicated to prioritising the mental health and well-being of our student community during these challenging times,” he added.
On August 9, a 23-year-old from Uttar Pradesh who was studying MTech at IIT Guwahati was found dead in her hostel room. While Sourav Kumar, a first-year B-tech student, died by suicide on April 10.
The deceased who was studying computer science at the institute allegedly died by hanging himself in his hostel room. While the exact cause was unknown.
