Hynniewtrep Youths' Council appeals for State University, fee regulation
The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has submitted a comprehensive representation outlining six key demands to the Meghalaya Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma. The memorandum focuses on vital reforms to address the challenges faced by students and educational institutions in the state.
One of the central appeals is for the establishment of a new state university in Shillong, aiming to alleviate the constraints placed on colleges due to the single affiliation with North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
HYC President Robertjune Kharjahrin emphasized, “We have seen the issues arising from NEHU’s sole affiliation, which restricts our colleges. A state university is essential, especially in light of the National Education Policy (NEP).”
The HYC also urged the creation of a Regional Office or Campus of Captain Williamson Sangma University in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region, offering greater accessibility to quality higher education for local students.
Among the other demands, the HYC stressed the importance of regulating fees in both government-aided and non-government-aided educational institutions. Financial assistance for state colleges and the establishment of Centers for Unified Entrance Test (CUET) were also highlighted.
The introduction of aptitude and logical reasoning into school curricula was another significant proposal. Kharjahrin noted, “We believe these skills are crucial for holistic education and future success.”
Addressing the predicament of students affected by the ongoing conflict in Manipur, the HYC requested special intervention and support for over 200 students who were evacuated from Manipur. The uncertainty surrounding the conflict has left their academic future in jeopardy.
HYC also said that Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma assured that steps would be taken to address the fee structure concerns. “Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is actively collecting fee data from various universities to ensure fair comparison and appropriate action,” HYC President Robertjune Kharjahrin stated.
Furthermore, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma acknowledged the importance of CUET examination centres within the state and assured the establishment of centres in Shillong, Tura, and Jowai from the upcoming academic session.
As Meghalaya welcomes the changes brought about by the NEP, the HYC anticipates potential shifts in fee structures, emphasizing the need for governmental involvement in ensuring affordable education for all.
HYC General Secretary Roy Kupar Synrem highlighted the plight of students stranded by the conflict in Manipur, underlining the urgency of addressing their uncertain academic trajectories. “Their futures hang in balance as the situation persists,” Synrem expressed.
