Sanjay Goyal said, "We are taking schedule shutdown for the maintenance. It's a very routine kind of thing.

The Meghalaya Power Department is implementing significant reforms to improve the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply across the state. Sanjay Goyal, Commissioner and Secretary of the Power Department, highlighted key initiatives focused on infrastructure upgrades.

One notable reform is the introduction of covered conductor cabling in parts of Shillong. This advancement will enhance the safety and durability of the distribution network. Additionally, the department is installing new transformers and upgrading existing power lines to address voltage issues and reduce disruptions.

Sanjay Goyal said, “We are taking schedule shutdown for the maintenance. It’s a very routine kind of thing.

He further said, “Some other works are also undertaken to upgrade our systems in terms of upgrading the capacity of the lines, installation of
new lines and other activities.”

He noted that shutdowns, while necessary, are being carefully managed to affect fewer consumers in urban areas and to expedite restoration using maximum manpower.

Statewide, around 700 to 800 new transformers are being added to meet the growing electricity demand. Efforts are also underway to resolve right-of-way challenges, ensuring the timely implementation of these projects.

“The department is also working to connect around 50,000 new households, particularly in newly developed areas, by upgrading existing infrastructure,” Goyal added.

These comprehensive measures aim to create a robust power infrastructure, benefiting consumers by delivering a more reliable and efficient electricity supply. With these upgrades, Meghalaya is set to overcome existing challenges and provide a sustainable energy future for its residents.
