Two people are reportedly dead after they consumed spurious alcohol in Assam’s Numaligarh district.
The deaths have been reported from the Panikora village, agitated locals have busted an illegal racket selling spurious liquor.
It is learnt that the locals have been complaining police officials of the presence of elements selling illicit liqour in the area, however no concrete action was taken so far.
The locals allege that it is due to the negligence of the authorities concerned that led to the tragedy.
Earlier, a large quantity of illicit country liquor was recovered from a school van with school children on board the van in Assam’s Teok.
The recovery was made when police officials raided the vehicle at a checkpost. The vehicle is now in police custody and the driver is detained.
In Gohpur, police officials have recovered a huge quantity of Arunachal-made liqour in a Tata Nano car. However, the driver of the car managed to flee.
Meanwhile, the excise department in Hailakanadi also recovered huge quantity of molasses during a raid conducted in the Lalasora and Barnapur Tea garden premises.
As per reports, around 900 kg of liquor jaggery was recovered during the raid. Subsequently, a large quantity of spurious liqour bottles were destroyed by excise officials and 5 people were arrested in this connection.
It maybe mentioned here that the Assam government has imposed a ban on molasses after one of the worst hooch tragedies in the state that left 170 dead.
