The Shillong blast of January 30 have raised many questions  about the status of security in Shilong. The proscribed HNLC claimed responsibility for last evening’s explosion in the city’s commercial hub Police Bazaar. Though no one was injured in the incident, the explosion has led to a fear psychosis of sorts and apprehensions among sections of the general public.

Giving details of the incident today, Meghalaya Home Minister Lakhmen Rymbui informed that two people have been arrested in connection with the blast of which one is a juvenile. Rymbui informed that police swung into action last night and within hours detained the first suspect. The subsequent interrogation led to the arrest of another suspect and what is more concerning is that a live bomb was also recovered and diffused. Rymbui said that quick action on part of the police led to the breakthrough.

On being asked if the arrested people were overground workers of the HNLC, Rymbui refused to confirm the same stating that the investigation will reveal everything.

Reports are also doing rounds that the blast was triggered due to non-payment of alleged taxes by shopkeepers. However, Rymbui said that he had no such information.
