Tibetian spiritual leader His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama arrived in Sikkim today on a three-day visit starting today. This is his first presence in the region after a gap of 13 years.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed deep honour and privilege in welcoming His Holiness at the Libing helipad in Gangtok.
Taking to social media, CM Tamang wrote, “It is an immense honour and a profound privilege to extend my warmest welcome to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at libing helipad, Gangtok. The presence of His Holiness brings a radiant light of wisdom, compassion, and peace to our land, enriching our hearts and minds with His profound teachings and exemplary guidance. May His Holiness’s visit illuminate our spirits and inspire us all towards greater kindness, understanding, and harmony. We welcome, His Holiness, to this blessed land of Sikkim.”
Tibetan representatives, including Korchen Rinpoche, Lachung Rinpoche, and Gonjang Rinpoche, joined Chief Minister Tamang, along with government officials and Tibetan Parliament representatives, to extend a gracious reception at the Libing Army Helipad.
Monks from various Sikkim monasteries put together a traditional Buddhist ritual of dance and prayer known as ‘Sherbang,’ creating an atmosphere charged with spiritual energy.
As His Holiness departed for Denzong Regency, devotees lined up along the path, eager to catch a glimpse and seek his blessings.
The Dalai Lama was welcomed with the traditional Chema reception ritual at a local hotel in the capital, followed by a guard of honour by the Sikkim Armed Police.
On December 12, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will impart teachings on Gyalsey Thokme Sangpo’s 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok. He will virtually lay the foundation stones for the Karmapa Park project at Rumtek and the Gyalwa Lhatsun Chenpo Statue project at Simmik Khamdong constituency, Gangtok district.
The historical ties between the Dalai Lamas and Sikkim date back to 1642 AD when the fifth Dalai Lama recognized the first king of Sikkim. This relationship has played a role in protecting Sikkim from invasions and contributing to peaceful coexistence.
The Dalai Lama’s past visits to Sikkim include teachings on Buddhist principles, initiation ceremonies, and contributions to the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism. The Dalai Lama’s emphasis on love, compassion, and human values resonates with Sikkimese devotees.
The visit holds special significance, reinforcing the enduring connection between Sikkim and the revered spiritual master.
