In a shocking incident, a body of a woman with her head severed from the torso has been recovered near the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati.

The body of the woman who is believed to be over 40 years of age was recovered at the stairs leading to the Bon Durga temple situated within the Kamakhya Temple complex on Wednesday evening.

As per reports, it appeared as some sort of religious ceremony (puja) was performed at the the place where the body has been recovered leading to speculations of the incident being a possible case of human sacrifice.

Reports further say items used for worship were found near the body, eyewitnesses saw incense sticks and an earthen pot near the body of the woman although there has been no official word.

Incidentally, the recovery of the woman’s headless body comes three days ahead of the annual Ambubachi Mela that will get under way on June 22.

The Nilachal Hills experiences a huge footfall of devotees during the five-day annual  religious congregation.

Police have already begun a probe but are yet to make any official statement. Police are using sniffer dogs in the investigation process.
