Fresh unrest in Manipur University; Police pick up close to 100 students in a late night raid

Manipur Police commandos accompanied by CRPF personnel stormed into the MU campus shortly before midnight yesterday and raided hostels and other premises and after random search operations picked up at least 7 professors and around 100 students.
Those picked up also includes at least 3 top MUSU leaders. Sources from inside the campus have said that the security personnel are still inside the University campus leading to utter chaos.
There are also reports of several students being injured and admitted in the hospital. Students and faculty members claimed that the policemen even burst tear gas shells during the raid.

It all began when during the day when Prof Yogendra Singh who was appointed as Pro VC by the now suspended VC AP Pandey walked into the University accompanied by Prof Shyam Keso Singh who was appointed as Registrar by AP Pandey.
The students protested saying they did not recognize Prof Yogendra Singh as the acting VC, During the last few day in the absence of Prof Pandey, Prof W Vishwanath has been the acting VC.
Later Prof Yogendra Singh and Prof Shyam Keso Singh wrote to the State Government including the State DGP saying that they were locked up by the students and a section of MUTA members.
In their letter to the DGP Prof Yogendra Singh requested sending up security personnel for opening the rooms of the Vice-Chancellor and the registrar which were locked up since the beginning of the agitation. The situation meanwhile remains tense and volatile in the MU campus.
