With Assam undergoing a major dry spell incidents of fire are being reported from several parts of the state.

A major fire broke out in Dibrugarh city late last night. The fire broke in the city’s commercial hub Natun Bazar gutting down more than 50 shops. Most of the shops which fell prey to the blazing inferno were cloth stores. It is being estimated that property worth Rs 20 crore has been lost in the fire. The fire reportedly broke out at around 3 in the morning and kept blazing for almost four hours. About 15 fire tenders reached the spot and battled the flame for hours before finally dousing it down. Dibrugarh DC Biswajit Pegu and SP Shwetank Mishra reached the spot and took stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, a major fire also broke out in Guwahati’s Hatigaon locality. The fire broke out at a local madrassa for women students. A major portion of the madrassa’s classrooms were gutted in the fire. It is being suspected that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit. Fire tenders soon reached the spot and doused the flames before they could spread any further. The madrassa was being used as a residential school for destitute women.

Meanwhile, a major fire broke out at the Namrup Thermal Power Plant in Assam. The fire broke out last night at the plant’s replacement power project when the steam turbine caught fire. Fire tenders soon reached the spot and doused the flames in time before it could get any more serious.
