Elections to 2 Rajya Sabha Seats In Assam And One In Tripura on Sept 3

The polling will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM and the counting of votes will be held on the same day at 5 PM.

Elections to 12 vacant seats of the Rajya Sabha, including two from Assam and one from Tripura will be held on September 3, 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Wednesday.

The two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam fell vacant as the sitting members- Sarbananda Sonowal and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa were elected to the 18th Lok Sabha in April this year.

Similarly, the sole Rajya Sabha seat in Tripura fell vacant after sitting member Biplab Kumar Deb was elected to the 18th Lok Sabha.

The distribution of vacant seats is as follows: Two in Assam, two in Bihar, one in Haryana, one in Madhya Pradesh, two in Maharashtra, one in Rajasthan, one in Tripura, one in Telangana, and one in Odisha.

10 of the 12 seats fell vacant after the incumbents won the 18th Lok Sabha elections, while the seats in Telangana and Odisha fell vacant as the sitting members, Dr. Keshava Rao (Telangana) and Mamata Mohanta (Odisha), resigned.

The last date for filing nominations is August 21. The scrutiny of nominations is scheduled for August 22.

The last date for the withdrawal of nominations is likely to be August 26-27.

The polling will be held from 9 AM to 4 PM and the counting of votes will be held on the same day at 5 PM.
