Economic Blockade Chokes NH2: Hundreds of Trucks Stranded in Manipur, Drivers Plead for Relief
First Published: 4th January, 2025 19:53 IST
The drivers and laborers, who have traveled from various states to deliver essential commodities to Manipur, are facing significant hardships.
Hundreds of trucks have been stranded at Sekmai for the past 5 to 6 days due to an economic blockade called by the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU).
Since December 31, 2024, COTU has been demanding the removal of Central Security Forces from Uyok Hills and has enforced an economic blockade on NH2 at Kangpokpi. As a result, hundreds of trucks have been stuck near the Sekmai Police Station for the last 4 to 5 days, with no assistance from the government.
The drivers and laborers, who have traveled from various states to deliver essential commodities to Manipur, are facing significant hardships. They have appealed to the governments of Manipur, Nagaland, and Assam to either lift the blockade or provide security and escorts to allow safe passage through the blocked areas, especially up to Senapati.
The drivers and laborers are suffering from a lack of water, toilets, and food at Sekmai. While the Manipur Drivers’ Association has provided some rice and essentials, many remain worried and continue to demand that the government resolve the situation by clearing the blockade and allowing them to proceed.
