CM N Biren Singh reiterated the state Government's commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to those fleeing conflict in Myanmar.

In a decisive move and reaffirming government’s firm stance on managing illegal immigration, the Manipur Government on Sunday detained a group of 26 Myanmar nationals who had entered India illegally through Manipur’s porous border and deported them back to their home country.

Taking to X, Chief Minister N Biren Singh reiterated the state Government’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to those fleeing conflict in Myanmar.

The state has ensured that migrants receive adequate care and support during their stay in India, safeguarding their dignity and well-being. said CM Singh.

However, officials made it clear that illegal migrants would not be allowed to remain in Manipur beyond a temporary period.

It may be mentioned here that the Manipur government has currently suspended the Free Movement Regime (FMR) at the India-Myanmar border across all check posts, locking the gates to control unauthorised crossings. This suspension is part of broader efforts to manage security and migration issues in the region.

The central government has also proposed the construction of a border fence along the India-Myanmar border, which passes through several states, including Manipur. In fact, at least 30 km of border fencing work has already commenced in Manipur to strengthen border security and prevent further illegal crossings.

In December last year, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs informed the Manipur Government about a new scheme to allow Myanmar residents who live within 10km of the border into Manipur, but after getting a “border pass” from the Assam Rifles, officials familiar with the matter said, adding that the facility will also be applicable for Manipur’s border residents who wish to visit Myanmar border villages.
