FKJGP stated that 44 of the 46 locations tested for the water samples showed the presence of Coliform and E coli organisms
Is the drinking water in Shillong safe? Maybe not. The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) collected water samples from 46 localities of Shillong, and found the water in at least 44 localities contaminated. It had presence of Coliform and E Coli organisms.
A delegation of FKJGP met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in Shillong today and submitted a report based on the tests conducted by State Food Testing Laboratory, Commissionerate of Food Safety located at Pasteur Hills, Shillong.
The organisation requested the Chief Minister to address the issue promptly. Drinking water is supplied across the state by the Public Health Engineering Department.
Briefing media persons, FKJGP president Dundee Khongsit informed that the CM Sangma has assured the group that he would look into the matter at the earliest.
Khongsit informed that the matter was taken up with the government following concerns from different localities about the safety of drinking water being supplied.
The FKJGP also claimed that the water had low pH value, high turbidity, and iron content above the prescribed limit, which clearly indicates that the water is unsafe for consumption as per FSSAI standards. Hence, continuous consumption of such water can be detrimental to human health.
