Doctor Stabbed 7 Times by Son Over Mother’s Cancer Treatment at a Tamil Nadu Hospital

The attack occurred in the hospital's OPD after the son suspected that the doctor had prescribed the wrong medication for his mother.

A Tamil Nadu government doctor was brutally stabbed seven times by a young man at Kalaignar Centenary Hospital in Chennai on Wednesday morning. The assailant, a 26-year-old man, was reportedly upset about the treatment being given to his mother who is a cancer patient at the hospital.

The attack occurred in the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD) after the son suspected that the doctor had prescribed the wrong medication for his mother.

The doctor, who is also a heart patient and has a pacemaker, suffered multiple injuries, including cuts to his forehead, back, and behind his ear, as well as a stab wound to his stomach.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister, Ma Subramanian, confirmed that the doctor is currently in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Authorities quickly apprehended the attacker, who attempted to flee but was caught and handed over to the police.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of healthcare workers in India. The Health Minister assured that there was no security lapse at the hospital, but the attack has prompted an immediate response from the state government.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin ordered an inquiry into the matter, pledging to take measures to ensure such an incident does not happen again. He also emphasized the invaluable service of government doctors, stating, “The selfless work of our government doctors is immeasurable, and it is our responsibility to ensure their safety.”

In solidarity with their colleague, doctors at the hospital have suspended non-emergency treatments and organized protests. The attack echoes the alarming rise in violence against medical professionals, a trend that gained national attention following the brutal assault and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

As healthcare workers continue to face growing risks, this incident highlights the urgent need for stronger protections and reforms to safeguard those who dedicate their lives to patient care.
