The announcement was made at Vajpayee Bhavan, the BJP state headquarters in Guwahati, by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Dilip Saikia, BJP Lok Sabha MP from Darrang-Udalguri and former national general secretary of the party, has been elected as the new Assam BJP president.

The announcement was made at Vajpayee Bhavan, the BJP state headquarters in Guwahati, by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who served as the election observer for Assam. Saikia emerged as the sole candidate in the fray, ensuring his unopposed election to the position.

Saikia succeeds Bhabesh Kalita, who chose not to continue for another term. Kalita, the MLA from Rangia, cited his commitment to serving his constituency as the reason for stepping down. Additionally, BJP’s policy prevents the state president from contesting the upcoming assembly elections in Assam next year.

Kalita, who assumed the role of State BJP president in 2021, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the party and emphasised his focus on constituency work. Both Kalita and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have filed their nominations to serve as members of the BJP’s national council.

Dilip Saikia’s election marks a significant leadership change in the party ahead of the crucial assembly elections, reflecting BJP’s focus on strengthening its organisational structure in the state.
