Cry for separate Garoland grows louder, protest reaches New Delhi

The demand for a separate Garoland is growing louder by the day. Several committees demanding the creation of a separate Garoland came together under the banner of National Federation for New State (NFNS) staged a protest in Jantar Mantar near Parliament in New Delhi hoping that their voices and demands would be heard in the corridors of New Delhi.

President of NFNS Munish Tamang addressed a gathering the highlighted the need for a separate Garoland.

NFNS Vice President Nikman Ch Marak chaired the meeting and spoke about the unity among all the tribal communities and said, “as we demand a separate state we don’t demand from other communities’ land, we just demand from our own land, our demand is a long pending one since British period. A memorandum was submitted to the Central Government on 22nd June 1947 by Garo National Council (GNC). In 1998,1999 and 2000 Garo Student Union (GSU) had submitted memorandum demanding separate state to the Prime Minister.”

Again in 2006, the A’chik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) submitted the memorandum for seperate Garoland. In 2011, the Hills State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Garo National Council (GNC) jointly
submitted memorandum.

The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) had passed a resolution for the creation of separate state for Garos (Garoland).

HSPDP president K P Pangniang and Kuki state vice president Baite spoke about why the demand for a separate Garoland. They also spoke about the various issues the Garo people are facing including being a minority community in most northeastern states.
