Achieving a milestone in the fight against COVID-19, the Assam health department on Wednesday conducted 1,43,109 tests in a single day, taking the total number of tests carried out so far to 15,73,800.

The department had set a target of 1 lakh tests in one day. However, showing exemplary hard work, the health workers and other staff surpassed the required target.

Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Inspired by our prime minister @narendramodi, we have been continuously stepping up our #COVID testing. I am so proud to share that in the last 24 hours, team Assam carried out 1,43,109 tests. This takes the total test conducted in Assam to a record high of 15,73,800.”

With a positivity rate of 3.20 per cent, Assam recorded the biggest single-day spike in coronavirus infection with 4,593 new cases on Wednesday, while six patients succumbed to the virus during the day.

The state had earlier reported the highest single-day spike of 2,900 cases on August 10.

“4593 COVID cases detected out of ~ 143109  maximum tests done in a single day with positivity rate just 3.20%,” Sarma tweeted.

The fresh cases included 632 from Kamrup Metropolitan, 460 from Kamrup Rural, 335 from Nagaon and 265 from Dibrugarh among others, the minister said.

Meanwhile, 2,136 more patients were discharged from various hospitals across the state.

The total number of positive cases in the state stands at 68,999, of which, 21,626 are active cases, 161 died and 47,209 persons have recovered from the disease.
