The forest department has expressed regret over the incident, promising a full investigation into the circumstances.
Rekibul Hussain, a young Class 6 student from Assam’s Nalbari district, was injured yesterday after a stray bullet hit him during a forest guard operation aimed at dispersing a herd of wild elephants. The forest guards reportedly opened fire to drive the elephants back into the forest, but in the process, a stray bullet accidentally struck Rekibul, causing an uproar among local residents.
Following the incident, locals staged a protest, gathering in large numbers to express their anger over what they alleged to be gross negligence on the part of the forest department. The protestors criticized the guards for resorting to blank firing near a populated area, posing a danger to residents and resulting in the unfortunate injury of the young boy.
The forest department has expressed regret over the incident, promising a full investigation into the circumstances leading to the firing. Authorities assured the public that they will review current protocols for managing wildlife and ensure that such accidents are avoided in the future.
