The Manipur Police has seized close to Rs 90 lakh worth of heroin. According to reports, the seizure was made by a team of the police that acted on a tip-off in the Mao district bordering Nagaland.

Like Assam, where a large number of drug seizures have been made, Manipur too has been a victim of drug abuse for many years now. In this incident, the narcotics are said to have been concealed in soap cases. Proximity to the Myanmar border too has been  cause of concern for the administration as a substantial portion of the drugs that are recovered in the Northeastern states are smuggled in across the Indo-Myanmar border.

Manipour has been battling drug and alcohol abuse for years now, with women playing a major role in the endeavour to fight the menace.  Intravenous use of narcotic substances has also contributed to a wide array of infections including HIV which various state governments have had to deal with.
