BJP’s DT Lepcha elected unopposed as Rajya Sabha MP from Sikkim

A seasoned politician in the political spectrum of Sikkim, BJP MLA Dorjee Tshering Lepcha has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. The ruling SKM had extended support to Lepcha thus ensuring that he is elected unopposed to the Upper House.

Tshering, who has a political career spanning over 3 decades, is presently the MLA of Gnathan Machong constituency, a five time MLA and also a three time minister.

The Sikkim BJP in a post on X said, “We are delighted to announce that BJP MLA Shri Dorjee Tshering Lepcha, representing the Gnathang-Machong constituency, has been declared elected (uncontested) to the Council of States from Sikkim (Rajya Sabha) today. BJP Sikkim Family extends our heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him on this remarkable achievement. We are confident that his presence in the Rajya Sabha will greatly contribute to the welfare and progress of Sikkim. May he continue to serve the people with utmost excellence.”

Who is Dorjee Tshering Lepcha?
Tshering was elected to the Sikkim Assembly for the first time in 1994 from Sang constituency. He won the seat by representing Sikkim Sangram Parishad.

In 1999, representing Sang constituency, Tshering was elected for a second time on a Sikkim Democratic Front ticket. He was also served as the state forest minister during this tenure.

He was re-elected once again from the Sang constituency on a SDF ticket in 2004 for the third time.
Tshering, this time, was made the state state road and bridges minister.

In 2014, Tshering was elected to the Sikkim Assembly from the Gnathang Machong constituency and was made the state transport minister.

Tshering, in 2019, once again won the election from Gnathang Machong constituency on SDF ticket. However, he later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
