Sikkim, one of the smallest states in India in terms of both population and area, has one of the highest suicide rates in the country.

Has the beautiful, tiny state of Sikkim become the suicide hotspot of India? As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and Sikkim Police data, the state recorded 811 suicides in three years from 2022 to 2024. In 2025, the state has recorded at least 42 suicide cases in the first four months.

In 2022, as per NCRB data, Sikkim saw 293 deaths by suicide becoming the top state with the maximum number of suicides across India.

In the following year, in 2023, the number of suicides dropped to 271, as per the Sikkim Police’s official website.

In 2024, the number further dropped to 247 but the number clearly is still high and continues to be a cause of concern as the state has already recorded at least 42 suicides so far in 2025.

Why Sikkim is Seeing So Many Suicides?

Reports indicate unemployment, family affairs, chronic illness, addiction, marital issues, financial crisis, as among the major factors leading to suicides.

It is interesting to note that Sikkim, one of the smallest states in India in terms of both population and area, has one of the highest suicide rates in the country.

The state has a population of around 6.32 lakh.

What is the Government Doing?

Recently, alarmed by the sudden spike in suicide cases in the state, Sikkim Health and Family Welfare Minister G T Dhungel has urged anyone experiencing stress or anxiety to seek help and reach out to trained counsellors.

The Minister shared the toll-free 24×7 mental health support numbers 14416 and 1-800-891-4416 of MANAS for assistance.
