In view of the bird flu outbreak in some parts of the country, the Assam government has imposed a temporary ban on import of poultry from the western states.

The state government in a statement said the highly pathogenic Avian Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection having zoonotic potential of causing huge loss in terms of mortality and trade of poultry.

As a precautionary measure, entry of poultry through the western border is banned temporarily, the notification said.

Advisories have been issued to the authorities concerned for active and targeted surveillance against the disease.

Bird flu has been confirmed in Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, high alert has been sounded in Maharashtra.

Several states, which have been reporting deaths of birds, including crows and migratory species, are scrambling to have samples tested for the virus.
