The Bihar Government instituted an SIT to probe sexual assault and torture case on children from Northeast.

Significantly, it has now come to light that the number of victims in the case is as high as 32 from three states of the region, Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.

These children were subjected to sexual abuse and even forced to dance at a Buddhist institution called Prasanna Jyoti Buddhist School and Meditation Centre near Bodh Gaya.

The alleged perpetrator, currently in police custody has been identified as Bangladesh national Bhante Sangpriye Sujoy. The monk has been sent to 14-day judicial custody.

According to reports, some of the children were even made to travel to Kolkata where they were sexually abused, raising questions on whether there were other accomplices who could be indulging in similar acts with children in West Bengal.

Speaking to Northeast Live, a police officer in the Bodh Gaya region, Arun Kumar said counselling of the students would begin from today and interrogation of the accused monk, who has been remanded to a 14-day judicial custody, is underway.

Medical examination of the children has already been conducted and four of the children were also taken to the judicial magistrate’s court for the police to record their statements.

Meanwhile, the Assam Police DGP Kuladhar Saikia has informed that a special investigation officer has been sent to Bodh Gaya to inquire into the matter.
