Big Day for Arunachal Pradesh; PM Modi Inaugurates Donyi Polo Airport and Power Project

Saturday, November 19 is a historic day for the frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh. The state got its first Greenfield Donyi Polo Airport and also a 600 MW hydro power project.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport built at Hollongi, 15 kms from the capital city of Itanagar. PM Modi also dedicated to the nation the 600 MW Kamen hydro power project at a grand event held in Hollongi, Arunachal Pradesh.
Speaking after the inauguration, PM Modi said, “Vikas ka udaan aur vikas ke liye urja (the airport and the energy projects) will take Arunachal Pradesh to new heights of development and progress. I congratulate the people of Arunahcal and Northeast.”
“We inaugurate the projects for which we have laid the foundations. Gone are the days of atkana (hinder), latkana (delay), bhatkana (mislead),” PM Modi said mentioning the fact that he had laid the foundation for the Hollongi airport in February 2019 and within three years the airport is operational.
Appreciating the happy, smiling faces of the people of Arunachal Pradesh, PM Modi said, “In Arunachal Pradesh you will always see smiling faces. There is never a shade of depression or sadness in any Arunachali face”.
“I have come to Arunachal Pradesh so many times that if I begin to count I might go wrong. But this is the first time I am seeing such a huge crowd that too at 9.30 AM in a hill state amid the morning winter chill,” the PM said referring to the massive crowd that had gathered to attend the historic event.
The Prime Minister praised and congratulated Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his team for taking the state to new heights.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju were present at the inauguration event.
The name Donyi Polo reflects the Arunchali peoples’ age old reverence to Sun ‘Donyi’ and the Moon ‘Polo’ in Arunachal. Pradesh.
The Great Hornbill Gate’ at the entrance of the airport is made of bamboo and cane and is designed by Arunachali architect Aroty Panyang from East Siang district.
Built at a cost of Rs 646 crore, the airport has a capacity to accommodate 300 passengers during peak hours and handle B-737 and A – 320 type aircrafts. The airport is equipped with ILS (Instrument Landing System) and CAT-I approach lighting system for all weather operations.
The new airport, spanning an area of 4,100 sq m will be Arunachal Pradesh’s first airport with a runway of 2,300 metres, suitable for the landing and take-off of Boeing 747, one of the largest passenger aircraft.
Initially, low-cost carriers IndiGo and FlyBig will operate flights from Hollongi.
IndiGo will begin service on November 28th, with flights to Kolkata and Mumbai every day except Wednesday.
The airport is part of the Centre’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) programme launched in October, 2016 to stimulate regional air connectivity and making air travel affordable for the masses.
