This path-breaking announcement was made by none other than the Bhutanese monarch Jigme Kesar Namgyal Wangchuck during his National Day address last week. This 1000 sq km Gelephu City Project, located less than 50 km from the northeastern Indian state of Assam, will develop into a” mindfulness city”, as King Wangchuck described, that will capitalise on Bhutan’s strengths in tourism, wellness and infrastructure companies. The Gelephu Project will include an international airport, zero emission industries and encourage investment from specially screened global players. The project has the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
