Sikkim Democratic Front leader and former Sikkim Forest Minister, Tshering Wangdi Lepcha has blamed Union Minister Kiren Rijiju for football icon, Bhaichung Bhutia’s defeat in the recent All India Football Federation (AIFF) presidential election.
Reacting on the Bhutia’s defeat against Kalyan Chaubey, the SDF leader said that the defeat of the football icon was the defeat of all Sikkimes
He claimed that Bhaichung’s defeat was due to political pressure put upon Bhutia and other Associations by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.

However he added Sikkim is proud that Bhaichung fight against his opponents.
Lepcha also slammed Sikkim Football Association president Menla Ethenpa for not supporting his own people, saying that Menla has destroyed the future of Football in Sikkim for his personal benefit.
Lepcha added Menla was including in AIFF Executive but it was of no use, Moreover Menla was SFA president for a long time but has done nothing good for the state football.
The election for the All India Football Federation took place on September 2, 2022.
Kalyan Chaubey a former goalkeeper with Mohun Bagan and East Bengal has won the AIFF President’s elections with support from 33 state associations.
