Battle for Gambegre: Independent Candidate Sengkrabirth Marak Is the Youngest and Has Rs 20,000 Only

Mehtab Chandee is the richest with moveable assets worth over Rs 18 crore and Sadhiarani Sangma is the oldest at 52.
The battle for Gambegre in Garo Hills of Meghalaya is going to be one of prestige for Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma as well as for former Meghalaya CM and TMC leader Mukul Sangma and his brother Zenith Sangma as CM Sangma’s wife Mehtab Chandee is the NPP candidate for the seat and her opponent is TMC’s Sadhiarani M Sangma wife of Zenith Sangma and Mukul Sangma’s sister-in-law.
There are four more candidates in the race including Meghalaya BJP’s Vice President Bernard Marak, Congress’ Jingjang M Marak and two independent candidates – Sengkrabirth M. Marak and Jerry A. Sangma.
Let’s take a look at the oldest and the youngest candidates in the fray and also their assets and educational qualifications as declared in the affidavits submitted to the Election Commission of India while filing nominations.
NPP Candidate Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma
Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma, 39, representing the National People’s Party (NPP), is the wealthiest candidate in the race. A resident of Walbakgre in West Garo Hills District, she is the wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
Her assets, as declared in her affidavit to the Election Commission, include Rs. 15,88,08,831 in movable assets and Rs. 9,66,12,000 in immovable property. Her spouse’s assets total Rs. 1,19,02,399 in movable and Rs. 6,69,68,000 in immovable assets.
A medical professional, Mehtab completed her MBBS from the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, in 2007.
TMC Candidate Sadhiarani M Sangma
The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate, Sadhiarani M. Sangma, 52, hails from Gambegre in West Garo Hills. Married to former MLA Zenith Sangma and the sister-in-law of former Meghalaya CM and TMC leader Mukul Sangma, she holds the distinction of being the second wealthiest and the oldest candidate in the by-election. She is the only female member of the district council of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
According to her affidavit, Sadhiarani has Rs. 1,24,11,580.26 in movable assets, while her spouse holds Rs. 46,28,219.10.
She completed her MA from North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in 2000 and has no criminal cases.
BJP Candidate Bernard Marak
Bernard Marak, 49, is the candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A resident of Kongbe Ading in West Garo Hills and a member of the Tura District Council, Marak is the Vice President of Meghalaya BJP. He has five criminal cases pending against him, including a POCSO case, as per the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India.
His declared movable assets are valued at Rs. 11,54,060, with his spouse’s assets totalling Rs. 24,14,953. His spouse is an assistant professor of English at NEHU. Bernard graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Don Bosco College, Tura, under NEHU, in 1998.
INC Candidate Jingjang M Marak
Representing the Indian National Congress (INC), Jingjang M. Marak, 49, from Sunny Hills, West Garo Hills District, has Rs. 57,78,142.79 in movable assets, while his spouse’s movable assets amount to Rs. 21,79,000. Jingjang has no criminal cases. He completed his MA from NEHU in 2000, and his spouse is employed as a government servant.
Independent Candidate Sengkrabirth M. Marak
The youngest and least wealthy candidate, Sengkrabirth M. Marak, 26, from Rohonpura, South West Garo Hills District, contests the election with minimal assets.
He has no vehicles, and his cash-in-hand is only Rs. 20,000. Sengkrabirth completed his Master of Arts in Garo from ICFAI University, Meghalaya, in 2023 and has a clean criminal record.
Independent Candidate Jerry A. Sangma
Independent candidate Jerry A. Sangma, 31, from Doldegre, West Garo Hills, declared movable assets totaling Rs. 10,46,923, with his spouse holding Rs. 91,500 in movable assets.
A graduate of Nongrum College, Zekabari, in 2023, Jerry’s spouse works as a Lower Division Assistant. Jerry has no criminal cases against him.
