Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain among boxers set to leave for Turkey for international training ahead of Paris Olympics

Olympic medal winning Assam boxer, Lovlina Boprgohain along with two-time World Championship gold medallist Nikhat Zareen and Asian Games bronze medal-winning boxers Parveen Hooda, and Preeti Pawar is all set to leave for Turkey for international trainings ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024.
The development was announced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) Mission Olympic Cell (MOC), during their 129th meeting on Wednesday.
Under Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) funding, MYAS will provide financial assistance to the Olympic-bound Indian boxers as well as two coaches and a physiotherapist, for the international training camp.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist boxer, Lovlina won the gold medal at the 2023 World Championships and obtained a quota for India for the Paris Olympics with a silver at the Asian Games last year in the women’s 75kg.
Marking remarkable journey in the world of boxing, the ace boxer won a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in the women’s welterweight event, becoming only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics She won a gold medal at the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and two bronze medals at the 2018 and 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. Borgohain is Assam’s first female athlete and second boxer to compete at the Olympics.In 2020, she became Assam’s sixth Arjuna Award recipient.
So far, India won four places in boxing for the Paris Olympics, all of which came in the women’s boxing.
Besides the boxers, MOC also approved foreign training camps for five TOPS wrestlers who are preparing for the upcoming Paris Olympic Qualifiers and Asian Championships.
