Assam police constable held for involvement in ONGC employees’ abduction

As sensation over the whereabouts of the third abducted Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) employee Ritul Saikia continues, an Assam police constable was arrested from Sadiya in Assam’s Sivasagar district in connection with the abduction case of three oil staffers.

The police constable has been identified as Basanta Buragohain, who was posted with 25th AP(ONGC)Bn in Sivasagar. Buragohain is a resident of Chapakhowa in Sadiya in Tinsukia district.

He has not reported to duty since the three employees had gone missing on April 21.

Sivasagar SP Amitava Sinha informed Northeast Live that Buragohain has links with the abduction case and the matter is under investigation.

Three staffers of the ONGC were abducted by the ULFA (I) from a rig site in Lakuwa area in Sivasagar district of upper Assam on April 21. While two of the three employees – Alakesh Saikia and Mohini Mohan Gogoi were rescued in a joint operation by Indian Army and Assam Rifles from Mon district in Nagaland, search is on for the third, Ritul Saikia.

Meanwhile, security forces have launched counter insurgency operations and search operation to trace out the third employee.

On April 22, the Sivasagar police had arrested 14 persons in connection with the case.
