Flood fury in Assam: One feared dead, two bodies recovered

ASDMA has put the number of deaths due to floods at 3 in last 24 hours

Amidst the ravages caused by floods in Assam for over a week since monsoon hit the state on June 10, one more person is feared dead and two bodies have been recovered as flood waters submerged several villages across several districts of Assam.

In Nalbari district, a youth is feared dead after being swept away by flood waters.

As per inputs, the youth hailing from Banekuchi village had gone for fishing today after which he went missing.

An SDRF team is conducting search operations for the missing youth. More details are awaited.

The second incident has been reported from Baksa district yesterday, where two bodies have been recovered on the banks of the Pagla Diya River.

The first body was recovered at Milanpur on the Pagla Diya River’s banks. The deceased has been identified as-Niran Barman.

The other body was found at Nayabasti on the same river bank. The deceased has been identified as Lela Brahma.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

The flood scenario in Assam continues to be grim with over 4 lakh people being affected in 15 districts and the number of human casualties due to floods in the state has increased to 3, according to Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

As many as, 1118 villages under 42 revenue circles in Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur districts have been affected by the deluge.

Over 81,000 people are taking shelter in 220 relief camps that have been set up in various flood-hit areas of the state.

Meanwhile, the Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger mark at Neamatighat at Jorhat.

Union Minister Amit Shah today called up Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and took stock of the flood situation in the state and assured all possible assistance.

“Due to heavy rain, the people in parts of Assam are braving a flood-like situation. I have spoken to CM Shri @himantabiswaJi and assured all possible assistance. NDRF teams are already on the ground conducting relief and rescue operations and adequate forces are on standby. The Modi government stands firm as it has always been with the people of Assam in these difficult times,” HM Amit Shah tweeted.
